How to Plan a Home Addition the Right Way
The decisions that determine whether an addition is smooth or painful, made before you build.
An addition is the most structural work most homes ever undergo, and the outcome is decided long before framing starts. The homeowners who are happiest are the ones who resolved the big questions on paper first.
Confirm feasibility early
Setbacks, lot coverage, and height limits define what is possible. A quick feasibility check prevents falling in love with a design the lot will never allow.
Single story or second story?
Building out is usually simpler and cheaper than building up. A second story adds structural reinforcement and access (stairs) but preserves yard space. Your foundation and framing capacity often make the decision for you.
Make it look original
- Match rooflines and pitch
- Match exterior finishes and trim
- Carry interior details through the new space
- Plan transitions so old and new flow together
